The United States of America (USA) is a top study destination, not just for Nigerians, but for many other nationals of other countries. The reason is not far-fetched; The US is home to the best universities in the globe. In the ranking of top universities in the world, there are usually more US Universities in the top 20 as compared to other countries.

Also, the good student support system, flexible education, cultural diversity, and path to pursuing a career after studies also contibute to making it a top choice for study.

Also, scholarship opportunities abound in the US. This is another reason international students consider the US for further studies. In this post, we would be sharing information about such scholarships.

There are 3 major scholarship sources in the US. They are: the US Government, US Universities, and corporate bodies. Each of these sources have their unique requirements for applicants.

US Government Scholarships

As said earlier, there are sponsored scholarship programs for international students seeking to study in the United States. These programs vary widely by country and many focus on specific degrees, disciplines, or types of U.S. study.

There are numerous US government scholarships have been made available by the USA Government, some of which are full scholarships for international students in the USA. Students from across the world (not just Nigeria), can apply for both these undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships as well.

We have;

US Universities Scholarships

There are a lot of US Universities that give scholarships to international students. Some of these scholarships come in the form of financial aid.

While there is more financial support or scholarship opportunities for postgraduate studies, there are some universities that offer financial aid at the undergraduate level. Click this link to see schools that give financial aid to international undergraduate students.

At postgraduate level, especially doctorate, most universities offer financial aid, scholarship, or teaching opportunities to international studies. However, this is based on the merit of the student’s application. Schools consider factors like Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, bachelor’s or master’s degree grade, work experience, community service, and so on.

Like I said, most schools offer a scholarship at doctorate level while others offer at masters level. From the time you begin taking those exams, you should know the requirements and offer of the school you are applying to. You can visit the website of the school to find out.

Final Note

  • Landing a scholarship to study in the US is not a mean feat; it takes a lot of diligence is searching, preparation, and application. It may also cost you some money, especially if you have to send documents by post. So please be mentally prepared.
  • A scholarship-granting body should usually not charge a fee for application. Any organization that is asking for a fee before writing a scholarship exam or making a submission is most likely trying to scam you. Beware!
